Salibungot: The Pink Sunset Beach of Jomalig Island

April 14, 2013

82 kilometers away from the shore of Real, Quezon is an untouched Golden Pink Beach named as Salibungot Beach. A proud virgin beach at the western coast of Jomalig Island, the farthest and easternmost island of the Polilio Group of Islands of eastern Luzon. Be captivated with its fine golden pink sand and cool down under its pine trees that naturally thrive at its shores.

Salibungot beach is a long beach extending along the southwestern edge of Jomalig Island facing Lamon Bay of the Polilio Group of Islands. The beach can be seen from afar as a wide golden sand beach with pine trees along its shores. Before sunset, however, the beach turns pink due to the orange tint of the sun and scattered red particles on the sand which proves that pink corals exists under the waters.

As the beach is facing west and when the sands turns pink, the best time to get here would be before sunset. If it gets too hot, not to worry as pine trees are there for you to take refuge, bring a hammock, lie down and enjoy the cool breeze.

At the time of writing this article, the beach, as well as the whole island of Jomalig has no resorts nor guest houses, as such, the beaches here including Salibungot, is a great place to beach bum if you intend to be with nature without the hassle of cramped beaches as compared to other famous beaches in the country. The sand is fine as powder and people hardly come here.

Because there are still no resorts around and pine trees proliferates the area, Salibungot is a great place for a beach camping. However do make sure to have your stay known by Jomalig's local government at its the central town, Talisoy which is only about 30 minutes ride away from this beach. The people of Jomalig are generally friendly and the island is safe.

As for food, you may purchase fresh fish, charcoal, and other supplies at Barangay Talisoy's public market or if you want it fresher, you can buy on an early morning at Sitio Moros, the southern fishing town of Talisoy and is also about 20 minutes away from Salibungot.

How to get to Salibungot:
Salibungot is one of the two best beaches in Jomalig Island and to get here coming from Manila, you need to ride a bus going to Infanta, Quezon (usually Raymond Bus terminal along Legarda St. corner Nagtahan) for 3 hours. You then need to drop off at Real, Quezon's fish port and get a boat to Patnanungan. Boats to Patnanungan leaves daily at 11:00AM and travel time is around 5 hours. Near the shore of Patnanungan Island, you need to hire another boat that will send you to Jomalig Island. Boat transfer happens at the middle of the ocean so be prepared. You may reach Jomalig's main port at Barangay Talisoy after an hour. From there, ask the locals to where you can hire a multicab (small vans) or a motorcycle to give you a ride to Salibungot which is an hour ride away.
